The sales receipt must indicate the purchase was made between January 1, 2009 and
December 31, 2010.

A tax credit is more valuable than a similar tax deduction since it reduces the tax you
pay dollar for dollar rather than just lowering your taxable income with a tax deduction.

A gray area exists as to whether or not pellet fireplace inserts are included in the new
rules. According to the Hearth, Patio and Barbeque Association, “The IRS did not state
that inserts are covered, or are not covered.  However, based on EPA’s practice of
treating inserts and freestanding biomass stoves in a similar fashion, manufacturers
may choose to include inserts.”

You'll also need a Certificate of Efficiency from the manufacturer for your tax records.
The certificate is available either from the dealer where you purchased the pellet stove
or the manufacturers website.
The pellet stoves shown below are
a step up aesthetically from the
cheap pellet stove variety yet
remain reasonably priced with
many of the same features offered
by more expensive stoves.

In addition they are all extremely
efficient, some as high as 83%,
and qualify for the new Energy
Efficient Tax Credit.

The tax credit for biomass stoves
is 30% of the purchase price,
including installation, up to $1500
total over a two year period
(2009-
2010
).
